The Newburyport Art Association’s
galleries at 65 Water Street are open daily, 11 to 5, year-around, and
there you will find exhibitions and a gift shop that feature the work of
regional member artists in a diversity of media and styles. NAA is located
in an historic building that has been a part of the waterfront life of
Newburyport in ship building, import-export and manufacturing for 200
years. In 1851, Robert Bayley and Sons, importers of molasses and other
products from the West Indies, owed the building as part of its wharfs. In
1886 the Victor Manufacturing Company purchased the building and made fireproof
doors until 1925. It has been the Art Association’s center since its
purchase in1969. Art classes are held for adults and children. On one
Wednesday of each month the prize-winning Powow River Poets hold evening
readings for visiting and local poets. Exhibitions, poetry readings and
most lectures are open to the public, free of charge. Call 978-465-8769
