Arts and Culture in Greater Newburyport


For a small city, Newburyport has an enormous wealth of visual, performing, cultural and literary art resources. Home to renowned artists, writers, performers and musicians, Newburyport offers a vast array of cultural centers and activities. From the Firehouse Center for the Performing and Visual Arts in Market Square to the Maudslay Arts Center in the 480-acre state park, and an abundance of art galleries, Newburyport offers theater, dance, and musical productions, visual exhibits and literary events for all seasons.

Visual Arts

The Newburyport Art Association’s galleries at 65 Water Street are open daily, 11 to 5, year-around, and there you will find exhibitions and a gift shop that feature the work of regional member artists in a diversity of media and styles. NAA is located in an historic building that hasNewburyport Art Association been a part of the waterfront life of Newburyport in ship building, import-export and manufacturing for 200 years. In 1851, Robert Bayley and Sons, importers of molasses and other products from the West Indies, owed the building as part of its wharfs. In 1886 the Victor Manufacturing Company purchased the building and made fireproof doors until 1925. It has been the Art Association’s center since its purchase in1969. Art classes are held for adults and children. On one Wednesday of each month the prize-winning Powow River Poets hold evening readings for visiting and local poets. The Firehouse Center for the ArtsRight in the center of downtown, the Firehouse Center for the Performing and Visual Arts offers world class musical and stage productions as well as an ongoing series of art exhibits. The Firehouse Center is situated near the banks of the Merrimack River on Waterfront Park and Market Square. It houses a restaurant, a theater for drama, dance, and musical productions and an art gallery. Its offerings are varied-from Shakespeare to David Mamet; Mozart to jazz, country, folk and rock & roll. When downtown, make sure to visit the western end of the Newburyport Boardwalk for the Somerby's Landing Sculpture Park. The City of Newburyport, the Newburyport Waterfront Trust, and the Firehouse Center for the Arts, collaborators in creating the Somerby’s Landing Sculpture Park in downtown Newburyport on the waterfront, are pleased to offer the 2005-2006 exhibit of eight contemporary sculptures. The goal is to enhance the visual appeal of the newly refurbished waterfront area. The exhibit is open all day every day year round, free of charge. Over 250,000 people will see the artwork during the year-long exhibit. Come and enjoy!

Performing Arts


Maudslay Arts Center is set in a natural amphitheater, formerly part of a magnificent private estate. In this beautiful setting, music of all variety is performed all summer long. Concerts include pop, classical, folk, country, and big band. Lawn and patio seating are available. The Maudslay Community Concert Band plays free concerts at the Arts Center. There are numerous outdoor concerts through out Newburyport in the summer months. In addition to Maudslay Arts Center, you can catch some outdoor tunes at the Arthur S. Page Waterfront Concert Series Friday nights in July.  There are Free concerts at Moseley Woods on Thursday Evenings in the Summer from 6:30 - 8 pm. Check the Calendar of events for details.

Maudslay State Park also features regular productions of Theater in the Open, and sponsors an Outdoor Sculpture Show. The mission of the Theater in the Open is to transform the magical tradition of storytelling into theater. Using puppetry, pageantry, music, movement, and acting, we present and explore myths, classic literature, original scripts, and modern dramas that reflect the diversity of cultures around us. The Newburyport Chamber Music Festival 
Held in August, this is a week-long annual chamber music festival to celebrate the joy of music and music-making with classical music concerts with receptions, free open rehearsals and children's concert, and fund raiser dinners with live music. www.NewburyportChamberMusic.org for more information or call 978-463-9776.

The Newburyport Riverfront Music Festival, held annually on the second weekend in July, is a celebration of music that takes place in scenic Waterfront Park in downtown Newburyport. Past performers include The Low Millions, The Damnwells, Bruce Cockburn, Nickel Creek, Jonatha Brooke, Shawn Mullins, Maia Sharpe, de Sol and Sonya Kitchell. Literary Arts

Home to numerous fiction and non-fiction authors, Newburyport recently celebrated its literary community with the Newburyport Literary Festival.
